National Night Out changed to October 4th, 2011

Good morning everyone, I received the below information from MPO Helen Gillespie, who is the 2nd Precinct Crime Prevention Officer and Coordinator for National Night Out:
 
As some of you may know, the National Association of Town Watch has experimented in the past couple years with changing the date of NNO to October.   (October is Crime Prevention month.)    Up to this point, Virginia Beach had chosen to stay with the traditional “first Tuesday in August” date.   However for 2011, several Hampton Roads cities, including Virginia Beach, have decided to move to the October date for this year.    A continued concern over the heat during August was one of the primary factors.   
 
We recognize that people will have mixed opinions over the date change.   Moving the date for 2011 will affect the National sense of community, but by voting to be consistent with the majority of Hampton Roads we will hopefully retain that feeling on a local level.    The National Association of Town Watch has endorsed the October date, so our events on October 4th are still officially “National Night Out”.     After NNO 2011, we will again evaluate the two different date options.
 
You will be receiving the registration form in a few weeks.   We look forward to your participation in a successful NNO 2011 on October 4th!

Minutes from May 3rd Meeting

MINUTES
Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Business Meeting:
Boy Scouts unable to attend this evening, so the meeting was called to order by Brenda Armitage at 7:05 pm.

Treasurer's Report:  Due to scheduling conflicts, the Treasurer was absent.  The Treasurer's Report is available on the website or by contacting Brenda Armitage.

Membership Report:
Currently there are 60 paid households/members.  At the end of 2010 there were 71 paid memberships.

Community Yardsale Update:
Brenda Barrett, co-chair, reported for Dottie Hampton and provided information flyers regarding the upcoming sale on May 14th.  There was a request for volunteers to assist with selling coffee/donuts and hotdogs/sodas.

Scholarship:
The $500.00 scholarship recipient was announced, Nathan Filipowski.  He is deciding among 4 colleges where he was accepted, an Eagle Scout, outstanding Honor Society student with over 200 hours of community service.  The scholarship check will be forwarded to his college selection.

Neighborhood Watch/Crime Report:
Ms. Passaris was unable to attend tonight, so Ms. Armitage reported that the Whirlaway area of Carolanne Farms, several block area, has been successful in obtaining over 80% of the resident signatures and are, therefore, getting a NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH sign to be posted in their area.  There was a continue plea for those in attendance to volunteer or encourage neighbors to volunteer to be block captains so that we can obtain more involvment and more Watch coverage.  Those interested should contact Ginny at 409-5105 with names of those who might be willing to participate.

A Business Security Task Force has been formed, met, and visited the local business surrounding our area.  The first formal meeting with the business owners/managers will take place on Wednesday, May 18, at 6:30 PM at Arrowhead Elementary School.  Officer Leta Kreiger will be attending to represent the Police Force.  She will be sharing about a new program called BUSINESS WATCH.

A suggestion was heard to invite a representative from the Newtown SGA to present at an upcoming Civic League meeting.  Additionally, it was suggested that cooperation between/among local Civic Leagues will provide more 'clout' when seeking assistance or making suggestions to the City.  Ms. Armitage requested a representative willing to attend a combined leadership meeting.  Mr. Dickie Cooper said he would consider the position.

Nominating Committee:  A group is needed to select officers for 2012, per the By-Laws.  A call was made for volunteers willing to assist with the selection of the slate of officers.
Next Meeting:  August 2.  This also the celebration of National NIght Out, an opportunity for communities to come together with cook-outs, get-togethers.  Ms. Armitage encouraged the attendees to work to have some sort of celebration on that evening as well as attending the meeting.


PRESENTATION:

Mr. Clay Bernick, with the City of Virginia Beach, presented a slide show of the proposed changes to the intersection of Witchduck/Princess Anne as well as the 'vision' of the mixed-use area.  He shared renderings of what Kempsville may have looked like 250 years ago, and explained the vision is to create an Urban Village that restores the character of old Kempsville.  Kempsville, like the Newtown corridor,is called a Strategic Growth Area (SGA).  Mixed-use can mean many things, perhaps shops/restaurants on a first level with living quarters above. 
·                    The buildings will be closer to the road with parking not so visible, behind the buildings.  Pictures of like projects in Newport News were shown. 
·                    Extending bike and walking trails, possibly to the Town Center area at some point, was discussed. 
·                    The intersection will include double turn lanes
·                    The area will include underground utilities.
·                    The old original Kempsville Middle School will be kept and used, at this time undecided on how it will be used, though there have been a number of suggestions.
·                    There will be some residences--senior housing, affordable and middle-income housing.
·                    All funding for the building of residences will be private and not city money
·                    All housing will be built to green standards and compliment the exisitng homes in the area.

These plans are still open for discussion and input from the community is encouraged.

Prior to the close of the meeting, another call for Volunteers was expressed with name and number of Andreia Worst (675-2020) as a contact.

Additionally, there was a suggestion from the floor that the dues be dropped to 10.00/year to encourage more involvement.  This will be reviewed by the Board and brought to the membership for consideration.
