A Thank You shared by a neighbor...

I'd like to thank those of you who write in to offer your appreciation for all the time and hard work our league volunteers put in. We know what we do will be paid forward and that's exciting to realize.

Below is one of many emails we have received over the past few months.
"I just wanted to write you a note and again say thanks for the wonderful job you all are doing. I love The Horse and Carriage paper, and I just recently went to the Blogspot, and it is really nice, I appreciate all of the information so much. Even tho I have not had a chance to be to any meetings or anything, I just want you to know that I am very appreciative of everything that everyone is doing. I am behind you all 100%. I am proud of our neighborhood and I hope we can keep it nice."

Our first Community Safety Fair was a success

Thank you all for coming out and showing support at the first annual Community Safety Fair. We could not have asked for better weather. It was really exciting. We were happy to see you all, as well as other vacationers and visitors throughout Virginia Beach. We estimate we had between 150-200 visitors. That's awesome for our first time out. We made some wonderful contacts and are already planning for next year. If you thought this year was something, just wait until 2008!

We were able to meet and talk to firemen from our local Fire Station #9 . They do an exceptional job, as do our local police department and rescue. We all were given wonderful instruction on how to be safe around water, in the sun, and in our homes. Adults and children alike were educated and equipt with the tools to keep themselves and others around them safe. This was an empowering experience for many.

Remember, we are enrolling now for the Family and Friends CPR class. Email us at CAFcivicleague@yahoo.com to sign up today. Look to June 28th for being the date for this course.

SECURITY ALERT!

All Neighbors,

A neighbor of mine got a phone call yesterday morning from their backyard neighbor. He said that several of the houses on his street (Gainsborough and Challedon) had their sheds broken into last night and wondered if they had hit ours as well. One of his neighbors suspects a couple of Mexican guys that he has seen walking around the neighborhood of CAF at around 2 or 3 in the morning. He has apparently seen them several times and says that they are looking around like they are looking for something, not just on a leisurely stroll. You might want to look around and make sure everything is still there and put locks on the sheds if they don't already have them.

Topic: Importance of CPR and an AED heart defibrillator

Dan B of the Tidewater Center for Life Support Training spoke, gave a demonstration, and answered questions on CPR and AED. Dan encouraged everyone to become knowledgeable about CPR and to act if the need arises. He gave the symptoms of a heart attack (chest and arm pain, nausea, sweating, shortness of breath) and called it the #1 killer in America. He detailed the four step chain of survival.
1. Early Access 2. Early CPR 3. Early Defibrillation 4. Early Care

Dan demonstrated on a mannequin, answered questions and announced a CPR, First Aid, and Babysitting Training Course on June 25th and 26th from 10:30-2:00 at the Kempsville Library for $45. Call (757) 446-5926 to register.

Topic: Mended Hearts Association Speaker

John M is a member of the Mended Hearts Association. This organization, started by Dwight Harkin, in 1951, is made up of survivors of heart attacks or heart disease. They visit, support, and offer assistance to others with these illnesses. There are 24,000 members across the country. They provide hope and encouragement to the patients and their families.

The Mended Hearts Association will sponsor a CPR course for the league at the Kempsville Library for a donation of $5 per member on July 7. Although not certified, the member will receive all training. For a $10 donation, the member can take the test and receive a certificate. A second date will also be scheduled. Contact Brenda A if interested. The class is limited to 24.

Topic: Final Announcements

Brenda A gave an update on our former Chair, Cherese J. She has had her surgery and is recovering well. We miss her and wish her well.

Communication options were discussed, so that league members can leave and receive information. This will most probably be a voice mail service. Prices and plans are being reviewed. The executive committee will pursue this a little further before voting.

There will be no Civic League meetings in July or August. There is a league sponsored CPR Class in July. There is no venue available for August. Meetings will resume in September at Arrowhead Elementary School.
Please support the Safety Fair on June 23rd at Point of View Elementary.

Respectfully submitted by Carole B, league secretary

Family Disaster Plan

Be prepared and gather a diseaster and evacuation supply kit; items needed to stay safe and be more comfortable during and after a disaster. It is possible you may not have electricity or water during or after a disaster. Items should be stored in a portable container as close as possible to the exit door. Review/update kit at least once a year. Keep emergency supplies in each vehicle and at your place of employment. Use travel routes specified by local authorities and don’t use shortcuts because certain areas may be impassable or dangerous.

Please click on the link above with the title "Family Disaster Plan" for more information so you'll be prepared for whatever comes your way.

If you would like to have a text document emailed to you with an detailed outline of things you should pack, things to keep in your vehicle, and steps to take before a diseaster, we'd be happy to email it to you. The document will be titled "Disaster Prepartion".

New Scam Targeting Military Spouses

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, May 29, 2007 —

The American Red Cross has learned about a new scam targeting military families. The caller (young-sounding, American accent) calls a military spouse and identifies herself as a representative from the Red Cross. The caller states that the spouse's husband (not identified by name) was hurt while on duty in Iraq and was med-evacuated to a hospital in Germany. The caller stated they couldn't start treatment until paperwork was accomplished, and that in order to start the paperwork they needed the spouse to verify her husband's social security number and date of birth. In this case, the spouse was quick to catch on and she did not provide any information to the caller.

Family and Friends CPR Class

Carolanne Farm Civic League, along with the Tidewater Center for Life Support (TCLS) from EVMS will be hosting a Free Family & Friends CPR course. This course will include adult, infant, and child CPR skills.

We are asking for a small donation of $5.00 for The Mended Hearts, an affiliate of the American Heart Association, dedicated to offering support and encouragement to heart disease patients and their families.

If you have a little one or family member at-risk, please join us for an informative course with plenty of hands-on practice and learn to make a difference. The Family and Friends CPR course is not for certification.

Since class size is limited, we are offering this to league members ONLY. Mark your calendar! At our June 12ths meeting, we will start signing members up for the CPR class that will be scheduled for July. This will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. If there is great interest, we will schedule a second class.

If you are not yet a paid member you may join today if you live within the neighborhoods of Arrowhead, Carolanne Farm, Carolanne Point, Huntington, Huntington Estates or Plantation Cove. When you pay your membership dues of $20, the CAFCL will offer $5 to Mended Hearts for you.
